Since our inception in 1995 as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, Horn of Africa has successfully administered over 120 grant-based programs assisting the communities of African refugees in San Diego, routinely exceeding all project goals. Abdi Mohamoud

Abdi Mohamoud

Executive Director
Born in Ogaden, Ethiopia, Abdi Mohamoud moved to San Diego as a refugee in 1982. He attended Crawford High School and then studied Business Administration/Finance at San Diego State University, where he obtained his Bachelor of Science. Abdi also holds a Master’s degree in Management from The University of Redland’s School of Business. He also completed a certificate program at Stanford University’s Graduate School of Business in an advanced Executive Management program. Mr. Mohamoud also completed an Executive Leadership program at Harvard University’s Kennedy School. In 2004, The San Diego Metropolitan Magazine named Mr. Mohamoud on its annual list of San Diego’s top 40 under 40 business leaders. In 2007, Abdi completed a graduate certificate program at the United States Institute for Peace on preventing violent conflicts. Fluent in Somali and English, Mr. Mohamoud has spent two decades in a leadership role within the East African community in San Diego through his work as founder and Executive Director of Horn of Africa. Through a combination of hard work, skill, and determination, Mr. Mohamoud has helped Horn of Africa become one of San Diego’s most respected and effective refugee assistance organizations. Mr. Mohamoud serves on several prestigious boards including The External Advisory Board to the Dean of College of Education at San Diego State University.
Hessein Nuur

Hussein Nuur

Director of Economic Development
Hussein has a long-established history of working with refugees and asylees in San Diego. He represented the community in different areas, such as being a member of the State of California’s State Advisory Council for three years. He has also served as a Board member of Horn of Africa for six years as Chairman till 2006. Mr. Nuur has worked for the Wilson Fish Program at Catholic Charities for 9 years. He has also worked as a Primary Language teacher at San Diego City Schools for four years. Mr. Nuur received his Bachelor of Science from the Somali National University in Somalia. He is currently The Director of Economic Development.

Our Experienced and Dedicated Staff

The staff at Horn of Africa also includes a team of experienced and dedicated outreach workers and case managers providing hands-on assistance to clients. All possess detailed knowledge of the local refugee community and experience in social service program delivery and speak fluent English and at least one East African language. An advisory panel of six senior volunteers works closely with the East African senior population.
